Forward In Faith is truly the story of our community from its beginning in 1879 when four young women came from Ferdinand, Indiana to begin their mission of teaching in Shoal Creek, Arkansas. Their faith carried them forward through those difficult pioneering days. Through it all they planted the seeds of faith and the Benedictine way of life firmly throughout the state of Arkansas.
Our foremothers were valiant women, an example of true grit supported by their prayer and work. They were not afraid of change, of moving Forward In Faith. In 1924, they moved to their new home in Fort Smith where they continued their work of teaching, music, and health care, always ministering to the People of God wherever they were needed.
We Sisters now begin a new chapter in our history of moving Forward In Faith. With that same enthusiasm and pioneering spirit, we seek a goal of $5,000,000 to build a smaller, more sustainable monastery for our present and future members because our present monastery is simply too large for our needs and too costly to maintain.
We thank Tom and Dorothy Caldarera, Honorary Co-Chairs of the Capital Campaign, and Leo and Barbara Anhalt and Buddy and Linda Spradlin, the Co-Chairs of the Campaign, who have walked with us from the beginning of our work on the capital campaign. Their support and dedication will see us through this project.
We are grateful to all of you who have helped us throughout these many years in our ministries and missions in Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas. We now ask you for your support and generosity to help us again move Forward In Faith to meet the challenges of the future.
Sincerely in Christ,
Sister Maria G. DeAngeli, OSB
